The Path
the path
it hasn’t always been straight
it’s crooked and broken in places
because adversities push it where it must go
but the path
the path continues and smooths
and the traveling becomes easier
when one realizes that the destination
is worth any kind of journey
and you
you are beside me
the path
it hasn’t always been bright
it’s fraught with shadow
because the branches are thick in this wood
but the path
it leads beyond
and the destination is brighter
where the trees open up, giving way to a meadow
and you
you are beside me
the path
it hasn’t always been safe
it’s full of thorny thickets that cut deep
because the destination is worth protecting
and it wouldn’t hurt if it didn’t matter
but the meadow beyond is clear
and the wounds heal as the sun warms
and you
you are beside me
the path
it hasn’t ever truly been traveled before
it’s unmapped, unknown
because each journey on it is unique
please forgive me for not knowing the way
and for trudging forward fearlessly anyway
because you
